UH women's volleyball finishes No. 3 in poll

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team finished No. 3 in the final USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 released yesterday.
National champion Southern California (31-1) was No. 1 with 1,625 points and all 65 first-place votes. Runner-up Stanford (32-5) was No. 2 with 1,558 points.
The Rainbow Wahine (34-2), who were swept by Stanford in the NCAA semifinals, received 1,466 points. UH was ranked No. 2 and Stanford No. 3 in the poll prior to the NCAA tournament.
Florida was No. 2, followed by Nebraska, Pepperdine, Washington State, UC Santa Barbara, Northern Iowa and Arizona.
BASKETBALL
Hilo stops Billings: Ryan Abrahams scored 24 points to lift Hawai'i-Hilo to a 101-91 men's Division II basketball victory over Montana State-Billings, despite a 39-point performance by the Yellowjackets' Cameron Munoz.
The Vulcans (9-4) won their Pacific West Conference opener last night at Hilo's Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Montana State-Billings is 6-4 overall, 0-2 in the PacWest.
Brady Hyde scored 23, Osadonor Esene 20 and Kyle Bartholomew 17 for the Vulcans.
Munoz, a 6-3 freshman guard, hit 13-of-19 field-goal attempts, including 10-of-16 on 3-pointers. He scored 33 points in the second half.
The two teams play again tomorrow at 7:15 p.m.

Ballard honored: Chaminade men's basketball player Leon Ballard was selected Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his role in the Silverswords 89-76 upset over Montana State-Billings on Saturday.
Ballard scored a game-high 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and added seven rebounds against the 16th-ranked Yellowjackets in the conference opener for both teams.
Ballard, a 6-foot-5 senior forward from Sacramento, Calif., is in the top seven in several categories: scoring (18.2 ppg, 2nd), offensive rebounds (3.0 rpg, 3rd), total rebounding (7.3 rpg, 5th), field-goal percentage (53.6, 6th) and free-throw percentage (73.7, 7th).
BASEBALL
Farrington fund-raiser: The Farrington High School baseball team is holding a Hawaiian Concert fund-raiser at the school to help defray the costs of an 8-day trip to play games in California and Nevada in March.
The event, which will feature a concert with several groups, food and prize giveaways, is 5-10 p.m. Jan. 17 at the school's amphitheater.
