Tug pulls boat off Maui reef

KIHEI, Maui — A tugboat pulled a grounded vessel off the reef near Sugar Beach yesterday and is expected to tow the 85-foot boat to O'ahu today.

The Messenger of Peace, a fishing vessel used in recent years for missionary work, broke from its mooring and ran aground in front of the Kealia Condominium in windy conditions Saturday morning.

The vessel was floated yesterday at 10:18 a.m. by marine salvage workers contracted by the state Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation with funding help from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

The boat's owners have been unable to offer any money to cover the approximately $100,000 cost of removing the vessel, officials said.

State aquatic biologists are expected to survey the reef today to assess what damage may have resulted from the grounding.
