Maui radio station looks to O'ahu

Advertiser Staff

The owner of KLHI FM 101.1, the Maui alternative rock radio station known as "The Point,'' has applied to the Federal Communications Commission to relocate the station to O'ahu.

Chuck Bergson, president of Kahului-based Pacific Radio Group, described the FCC application as an exploratory move by the company that owns six radio stations on Maui. Even if the application is approved, he said, the company has yet to decide whether to proceed with the move.

According to the application, Pacific Radio Group seeks to change the station's community of license from Lahaina to Wai'anae, providing that community with its first local transmission service. The station's range will reach all of O'ahu.

The FCC has set a deadline of Feb. 14 for comment on the proposal. The approval process is expected to take up to a year.
