NORTH SHORE

High surf due next few days

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for the North Shore for today and the next few days.

Waves reaching 25 feet or more are expected today and tonight and are expected to last for several days, said Tim Craig of the weather service.

Lt. John Hoogsteden, with the North Shore lifeguards, said all beaches on the North Shore will be under a no-swimming advisory as long as the high waves remain.

Hoogsteden said people should not go near the water and should check with lifeguards for safety conditions even after the high waves subside.

EAST HONOLULU

Kahala dolphins to give birth

Hi'iaka and Mahina, dolphins in captivity at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawai'i are pregnant and expected to give birth this summer, according to Dolphin Quest, a program dedicated to public education and conservation of marine wildlife.

These are the first dolphin pregnancies at the O'ahu resort. The two dolphins were mated with a male dolphin from the Big Island that was flown over last May.

Dolphin Quest, which operates at the Kahala Mandarin, the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island, the Beachcomber InterContinental Resort on Moorea, French Polynesia, and the Bermuda Maritime Museum, has had 12 dolphins born in captivity in its 15-year history, said Gray Stafford, director of animal management for Dolphin Quest.

"The animals are more successful because we are learning more about them," Stafford said. "The mortality rate for dolphins born in the wild is very high in the first year, so the more we can learn in-utero, the better we're able to help them in the future."
