Punahou girls edge Kamehameha

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

After two months of practice and four weeks since the last preseason game, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls soccer season finally kicked off yesterday.

Punahou's Adria Campbell, far left, heads the ball into the heart of the Kamehameha defense. Campbell's shot, off a direct kick assist from Allison Tsuchida, resulted in the game's only goal.

And defending champion Punahou wasted little time in taking charge, scoring in the seventh minute and holding on to defeat Kamehameha, 1-0, at Alexander Field. The goal came on a header by Adria Campbell via Allison Tsuchida's direct kick assist.

Kamehameha threatened to tie it in the closing minute, but India Soo's line shot from the left flank sailed over the crossbar and moments later Buffanblu goalkeeper Ali Lipsher snared a free ball off a corner kick.

"That's the way it's going to be in the ILH — there's no one team that's way above another," Punahou coach Jorge Barbosa said. "When we play them the next time, it'll probably be just as close, which is a good thing."

For now, the teams are mostly thankful to finally be playing someone in a different jersey. Punahou started practice on Nov. 6, and Kamehameha began official workouts two days later. Although all the ILH teams got to enjoy preseason action in the following month, the other leagues started their regular seasons in mid-December.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association, for example, began regular-season play 27 days ago, on Dec. 13. For both Punahou and Kamehameha, their last game against a high school opponent was on Dec. 7, at the Baldwin Invitational on Maui.

Barbosa said the ILH's six-team, double-round robin schedule makes for a short regular season, which needs to be timed accordingly with the state tournament. This year's state tournament will be held Feb. 19-22, a week later than last year's.

Punahou has tried to keep busy with scrimmages, including ones against the boys JV and intermediate teams and an alumni team. For Kamehameha, the Warriors' only simulated game in the past month was a match against an alumnae team on Dec. 28.

"We also have some Neighbor Island kids who went back home for the holidays," Kamehameha coach Michele Nagamine said. "With the long layoff, it's been really tough to keep everybody focused and in game shape."

Tsuchida's direct kick came after Kamehameha goalkeeper Sarah Vasconcellos was called for a handball outside a faintly painted penalty box.

"We played behind for 72 minutes, and Punahou is an excellent team — they've got depth, experience and good coaching," Nagamine said. "We had three freshmen out there, so it's nice to see we were only a couple of steps away from them. I'll be curious to see four or five games from now if we can finish those shots we had."
