Witnesses told police the car was attempting a U-turn on the two-lane highway at Johnson Road when it was struck by a van at 9:15 a.m.

A man, woman and two children, ages 4 and 2, who were in the van, were taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where they were listed in fair condition. Three 17-year-old girls in the car were taken to The Castle Medical Center by ambulance with minor injuries.

The highway was closed to traffic in both directions until 9:45 a.m.
