Seven companies were involved in fighting the fire at 920 Kalihi St., which started at 9:44 a.m. The fire was reported under control at 10:16 a.m. No one was injured.

Six adults from the family that owns the house, as well as a tenant family of two adults and a 13-year-old boy, were being assisted by the Red Cross.

Fire Capt. Richard Soo said the fire started in the rear of the two-story building that is rented out. The cause is under investigation.

A woman and her grandson were in the rented unit when the fire started but found their way out. They do not reside at the address, said Soo.

The damage was concentrated to the back half of the house. The front portion, where the owners live, sustained smoke damage, said Soo.
