Big Wave Invitational won't surf at Waimea

Advertiser Staff

The "Eddie" won't go this weekend.

Despite forecasts for waves larger than 20 feet today, contest officials for the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational announced yesterday that it will not run at Waimea Bay.

"We know that the required wave size is going to be there," contest director George Downing said. "But the forecast is for strengthening on-shore winds throughout the day and that has led us to our decision to hold off. We don't want to hold this event in marginal conditions."

The contest can only take place when traditional wave heights are at least 20 feet (with 30-foot wave faces) at Waimea Bay. It has been completed only five times since its creation in 1986.

The contest has until the end of February to run one day of competition.
