Hirata's long bombs lift Raiders over Warriors

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

With reigning Advertiser State Player of the Year Derrick Low held to a season-low four points last night, the Iolani School boys basketball team turned to his best friend for offense.

Junior guard Ryan Hirata, Low's close buddy since hanabata days, drained four long 3-pointers and finished with 12 points to help the Raiders hold off Kamehameha, 43-31, at the Warriors' Kekuhaupi'o Fieldhouse. Iolani improved to 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu; Kamehameha fell to 1-1.

Hirata's 3-pointer from the left wing gave the Raiders a 29-25 lead early in the fourth period, just seconds after the Warriors' Caleb Spencer hit a layup to close the score to 26-25. Hirata later swished a 25-foot rainbow from well past the top of the key to cap a 10-2 run which put Iolani up 41-29.

"Ryan has only two rules (about shooting) — one, he has to have the ball and two, he has to be inside the gym," said Kamehameha assistant Tom Shirbish, who coached Hirata at Maryknoll two years ago. "He always could shoot it, even when he was in the eighth grade."

Low said it started long before that.

"I've known Ryan all my life, and it's no secret he can shoot," Low said. "He was hitting NBA 3-pointers tonight, and that's what we need him for. There's nothing you can do to stop him when he steps out that far and shoots it."

Hirata's hot hand came in handy, as the Warriors' sticky 3-2 matchup zone limited Low to six shot attempts. Spencer and fellow guard Galen Santana took turns defending Low, switching off on screens. Low scored 28 points in a victory over Punahou on Tuesday.

"They had a great defensive scheme; they followed the cutters and switched off well," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "But fortunately we played good defense, too. And we've got a lot of guys who can score besides Derrick."

Iolani forward Bobby Nash scored a game-high 13 points and teammates Zach Tollefson, Todd Blankenship and Kyle Pape combined for 12 points off the bench.

Low, a 6-foot-1 point guard, finished with four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

"We know that everybody is going to put pressure on Derrick, but he is so unselfish, we still couldn't score without him," Hirata said. "He's still the nucleus of the team."

Said Low: "I don't care how much I score. I could score 50 or I could score two, but the main thing is that we win."
