Hawaii Foodbank names directors
Hawaii Foodbank has appointed five new members to its board of directors. They are:
- Cindy Bauer, assistant pastor at Grace Bible Church in Kalihi Valley since 1997. She has helped create a ministry and feeding program that serves more than 1,000 people weekly. She directs a daily discipleship program, develops youth programs for Hawai'i teens and organizes a support and morale program for police officers in the Kalihi district.
- Roger Godfrey, president of Times Super Market Ltd. His food retailing experience in Hawai'i began in 1974 when he was named executive vice president and general manager of Certified Corp. He later became director of distribution at Foodland Super Market Ltd., then served 13 years as division president at Fleming Companies Inc.
- Peter Ho, executive vice president, corporate banking, Bank of Hawaii. He joined Bank of Hawaii in 1993 as assistant vice president in the national banking division. In 1996 he joined the Hawai'i corporate banking division, and became deputy manager in 1998. In 1999 he became senior vice president with managerial responsibility for the bank's newly formed corporate banking division. In 2002 he was appointed to executive vice president responsible for corporate banking and commercial real-estate lending.
- Teresa Kendall, community volunteer. Working in the promotions department of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and MidWeek, she organizes client and staff functions. She is also a member of the communications committee at the Junior League of Honolulu.
- Gary Yoshioka, market unit general manager, Pepsi-Cola Hawaii. He is also vice chairman of the Hawai'i Food Industry Association and a graduate of the University of Hawai'i and The Kellogg School of Management.
Kuakini auxiliary elects officers
Kuakini Medical Center's Auxiliary has elected its officers for 2003. They are: president, Kenneth Kunisaki; vice president, Irene Iimura; treasurer, Dorcas Okuna; recording secretary, Sharon Kurio; and corresponding secretary, Beverly Klopf.
First trendsetter award presented
Rob Pacheco, owner of the eco-tourism firm Hawaii Forest & Trail, received the inaugural Big Island Trendsetters Award from the Big Island Visitors Bureau.
From its initial rainforest bird walk in 1993, Hawaii Forest & Trail has expanded its guided nature tours to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, stargazing atop Mauna Kea, a mule ride, a valley waterfall hike, and specialized birding tours.
Three graduates of Dole honored
Three graduates of Dole Middle School on Friday received the "Pride of Dole" award from their alma mater for their achievements and contributions to the community.
Coronado Aquino, banquet manager at The Royal Hawaiian hotel, attended Dole from 1957 to 1959. He conducts etiquette workshops for visiting students and participates in culinary programs in the schools.
Gail Tagashira, an editor with the Los Angeles Times, attended Dole from 1960 to 1962. She credits her first journalism teacher at Dole as an important influence in her 30 years as a journalist.
Raphael Sanders, a music professor at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, attended Dole from 1969 to 1971. He learned to play the clarinet at Dole. As a clarinetist, he has traveled worldwide performing, recording and teaching.
School administrators say one purpose of the award is to inspire Dole Middle School students with examples of alumni who have become successful in their personal and professional lives.
Two LPNs receive Chapin award
Sheilah Anderson, LPN, and Shirley Higashihara, LPN, received the Jean Butler Chapin Award for Support, Education and Advocacy from the O'ahu affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The nurses were honored for their work with the Diamond Head Mental Health Center's Life Skills Program.
Nurse manager wins scholarship
Bernadette Milbury, nurse manager at The Queen's Medical Center, is a recipient of an ONS Foundation Master's Scholarship.
The $3,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Oncology Nursing Society, is aimed at improving oncology nursing by helping registered nurses further their education. Milbury is a camp counselor for teens with cancer and teen fellowship coordinator for the Newman Center at the University of Hawai'i.
Three UH students get scholarships
Cory Fraser and Steven Lum of the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine and Woo Ae Byun of the UH School of Nursing are recipients of $750 scholarships from the Aloha Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Scholar student nominated
Jay Matsuo Tanaka of Honolulu, a marketing major at the University of Northern Colorado, was one of 50 business students nominated by the school to the United States Achievement Academy as All-American Scholars.
Correction: Sheilah Anderson has received the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill's annual Jean Butler Chapin for Support, Education and Advocacy award. Her name was misspelled in a previous version of this listing.
