Kamehameha shuts down Iolani in ILH softball

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Having lost Hawai'i's most dominant pitcher, an NCAA Division I shortstop and two other first-team Advertiser All-State players to graduation, the Kamehameha Schools softball team could have been considered to be in somewhat of a rebuilding mode this season.

Could have. Somewhat.

The defending state champion Warriors actually only reshuffled, and Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro says they simply "reloaded."

Kamehameha blanked the visiting Raiders, 4-0, yesterday to improve to 8-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, tied for first place with Punahou. Iolani dropped to 7-2.

The Raiders face the Buffanblu on Jan. 21, and the Warriors play Punahou exactly one week later. Only two ILH teams will advance to the state tournament.

"One of us will be left out," Shimabukuro said. "But Kamehameha definitely is the team to beat right now."

Iolani beat the Warriors, 3-1, in the season opener on Dec. 4, scoring all three runs in the first inning. Kamehameha turned the tables yesterday, scoring three runs in the first inning on two hits and two errors. That was more than enough for Warriors starter Kate Robinson, who retired the first 10 batters and finished with a two-hitter.

Robinson, a junior who was first-team All-State as a first baseman last year, struck out five and walked one.

"The best thing about it is she's still going to get better," Kamehameha coach Ty Sing Chow said. "She bailed us out with some big strikeouts. She's taking it over for us."

Robinson also helped herself at the plate, driving in Liane Horiuchi with a line single to center in the first inning. The ball got under the glove of the Raiders' center fielder, allowing Brandi Peiler and Robinson to also score.

A similar play made it 4-0 in the sixth, when Nicole Kalakau lined a single to right which skirted under the glove of Iolani's right fielder and rolled to the fence, allowing Kalakau to circle the bases.

The Raiders had threatened in the top of the inning, loading the bases with one out. But Robinson got a strikeout and groundout to snuff out the rally.

"We needed one or two clutch hits," Shimabukuro said. "They took control of the game early and Kate did a good job of keeping us off-balanced. And their defense played very well."

That defense is a mixture of new faces and returning starters, some in different positions. Peiler, a first-team All-State outfielder, remains in left field and Kaulana Gould returns at catcher. Sharee Fonoti, an All-State third baseman last year, has moved to shortstop to replace Ashley Ruff, who now plays at the University of Hawai'i.

Napua Naumu moved from right field to step in for All-State center fielder Gina Cummings, Horiuchi took the place of All-State second baseman Samantha Sardinha and Robinson replaces Leo Sing Chow, the 2002 State player of the Year, as the ace.

"We're lucky because we've still got a lot of talent up here," Ty Sing Chow said. "It's just a matter of getting them into our game and the flow of the program. We've still got a ways to go."
