Iolani sweeps titles at Kalani

Iolani swimmers won both girls and boys team championships yesterday in the 26th annual Kalani Invitational at Kalani High, stamping the Raiders as early favorites for next month's state championship meet.

Iolani's Jonathan Lau and three teammates won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.05 at the Kalani Invitational. Daniel Lim led off and was followed by Julian Price, Lau and Kyle Ota.

Defending state boys champion Iolani beat second-place Punahou by 201 points, 457 to 256. No other team scored over 200; Kaiser was third with 181.

Iolani and Punahou boys teams each was without one of its best swimmers. Iolani senior Hongzhe Sun and Punahou junior Noa Sakamoto were in Sydney, Australia, competing for the United States in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Sakamoto won two silver medals.

Iolani's girls beat out Punahou 388 to 322.5 with Kamehameha third at 283.

Thirty-two schools and 500 swimmers were entered.

There were four double winners and three records were set in individual events. The records were all set in Friday's qualification heats.

In the girls' meet, Maui High senior Chelsea Nagata won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Kapolei freshman Meredith Egloria won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and set a meet record of 59.10 in the backstroke.

In the boys' meet, Seabury Hall junior Randall Tom won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and set a butterfly record of 50.68, while Iolani junior Mark Eckert Jr. won the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle, and broke a 20-year-old freestyle record with a time of 1:41.71.

Meanwhile, in the final day of the four-nation meet in Sydney today, Sakamoto took fifth place in the 1,500-meter freestyle in 15 minutes, 50.86 seconds. Sun finished ninth and Sakamoto 12th in qualifying heats for the 200 individual medley.

Sakamoto earned silver medals on Friday and yesterday for second-place finishes in the 400 freestyle and 4x200 freestyle relay. He qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 free with a time of 3:56.81.
