• The Sales and Marketing Executives of Honolulu has named University of Hawai'i President EVAN DOBELLE its 2002 Sales Person of the Year for accomplishments in his first year in office.

These include initiating a systemwide strategic plan; advancing a variety of business, legislative, governmental and community partnerships statewide; securing financing for construction of the new John A. Burns School of Medicine in Kaka'ako; and fast-tracking nearly a half-billion dollars in capital-improvements.

SME, with more than 150 members, is an organization of sales and marketing managers from a number of disciplines, including advertising, construction, finance, healthcare, tourism, media, retail and real estate. Dobelle will receive the award at a luncheon Feb. 26 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

• Outrigger Enterprises Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer DAVID CAREY has been named Person of the Year 2002 by Travel Agent Magazine.

Carey, featured in the publication's Jan. 6 issue, is recognized for accomplishments, including Outrigger's $300 million Waikiki Beach Walk project slated to begin next year, aggressive expansion statewide and across the Pacific, and Outrigger's recent strategic partnerships with hospitality operators Fairfield Resorts and Marriott International.

Carey "exemplifies creative leadership and is a true visionary in the hotels and resort industry segment," said James Shillinglaw, magazine editor in chief.

Carey began his association with Outrigger in 1982 as a Carlsmith Wichman Case Mukai and Ichiki attorney, specializing in corporate and real estate law. Following a stint as Outrigger executive vice president and general counsel in 1986, he was named company president in 1988 and chief executive officer in 1994.

JOHN SUTTON, chief financial officer of Starr Seigle Communications, has been named to the newly created position of executive vice president and chief information officer to guide information technology growth.

Replacing Sutton as senior vice president and chief financial officer is CLANCY LYMAN, formerly vice presidentifinance and treasurer, and assistant corporate secretary of Hawaiian Airlines; and former executive vice president, chief financial officer, treasurer and secretary at Viata Software Inc.

Lyman will focus on finances; Sutton, on information technology.

WESLEY YAMAMOTO, vice president for investments for Prudential Financial, has been elected 2003 president of the Investment Society of Hawai'i. Other officers are vice president, DAVID NAKO of Edward Jones; treasurer, BARBY CLARKE, of Bank of Hawaii; and secretary, ROBERT CHOY of Merrill Lynch.

Also elected to the Board of Directors were MICHAEL CHUN of Morgan Stanley; SCOTT ELLIS and PATRICK DAILY, both of Smith Barney; GREGORY BOXOLD of UBS Paine Webber, WALTER KNOX of Merrill Lynch; PATRICIA KWAN of Smith Barney, and MERO GIASOLLI of First Hawaiian Bank.

MICHAEL NAKAGAWA, formerly of Foodland Super Markets, has been hired by Star Markets as director of human resources. He is a 17-year veteran of the retail grocery business. Star operates 10 stores on O'ahu, Maui and Kaua'i.

VALERIE YEE, director of development and marketing for Hawai'i Public Radio, will continue to oversee that staff with her recent appointment as HPR vice president and assistant general manager.

• Also at the station, KAYLA ROSENFELD, newsroom director for the past year, has been named news director.

UTE REGAN, corporate support manager since joining the station in January, 2001, has been named director of corporate support.

PAIGE SATO, retail service manager for Hawai'i Pacific Federal Credit Union, has been promoted to business manager. She will be responsible for increasing membership, as well as for company marketing, advertising and promotions. She is a former assistant manager of collections for Norwest Financial, now Wells Fargo Financial.

LINDA J. POSTO has been named senior vice president, Financial Services Group, at locally owned Atlas Insurance Agency Inc., heading up a new division intended to offer a "one-stop" insurance division, offering a range of services, including long-term care; group and individual life insurance; disability income protection; employee benefits, and pension plans tailored to Hawai'i's small businesses. Posto was former director of the Pacific Financial Group, Hawai'i.
