THE LEFT LANE
Anime after dark

Advertiser staff and news services

Anime is for adults, too. The intensely bold Japanese action-animation style is a big lure in the Cartoon Network's expanded Adult Swim block.

Adult Swim runs three hours on five nights a week, Sunday through Thursday. Japanese anime action rules Monday through Thursday nights with the new "Lupin 3" at 10 p.m., the mythical quest "Inuyasha" at 10:30 p.m., the spirit world ambassador "Yu Yu Hakusho" at 11, and the galactic bounty hunters of "Cowboy Bebop" at 11:30.

The channel started with repeats of American action cartoons such as "Batman" and "Transformers," said Mike Lazzo, Cartoon's senior vice president of programming. Then it picked up Japan's "Dragon Ball Z" (see it at 4 and 4:30 p.m. weekdays this week, 3 and 3:30 p.m. weekdays next week), pictured above, and saw its ratings go through the roof.

Some of the anime is not appropriate for everybody," Lazzo cautioned. "There may be too much warfare or too much talking.

Big-band Hawaiiana

KINNEY
Swishing cellophane hula skirts and big bands playing Hawaiian music offer a nostalgic stroll down memory lane at 6:30 tonight at the Kailua Public Library. Steve Fredrick, a film historian who collects and shares vintage cinema, will conduct the program, which includes a 1940s flick, "Hawaiian Big Band Orchestras," with old-time maestros such as Ray Kinney, Lani McIntyre and Danny Kua'ana.

The free screening will be at the library's Reading Tree. Information: 266-9911.

Color it bright

Drab isn't fab for spring. Designers are showcasing duds in Crayola-like hues, ranging from canary yellow to electric blue and lime green.

Day-Glo shades recently hit the runway at Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, DKNY, Marc Jacobs, Prada and Versace on everything from evening wear to work suits.

Even Helmut Lang — known for his conservative-colored ensembles — featured splashes of brightness.

"The dour head-to-toe look is gone, but black has not gone away," says Carla Engler, beauty/fashion director of Ladies' Home Journal.
