Korean centennial is for all of Hawai'i
| Special report: 100 Years of Dreams, Accomplishments |
Hawai'i prides itself on its ethnic diversity, the "stew pot" of cultures and traditions that create our unique Island society. One group in our diverse society that has received somewhat less attention than others are the Koreans.
That's partially explained by their numbers, which are relatively small. And part of it may be cultural: Koreans (particularly the early immigrant families) were hard-working and private.
But if the story of Hawai'i's Koreans is less well-known than others, it is as compelling and inspiring as any of the storylines that make up modern Hawai'i, a story that will soon become more widely known as Hawai'i commemorates the 100th anniversary of Korean immigration to the Islands.
The year of celebration officially began yesterday with a banquet and will continue throughout the year with festivals, art exhibits, lectures and more.
A full schedule of events can be found at the Centennial Committee's Web site, www.koreancentennial.org.
