Feb. 3 is the deadline to apply to take the March 15 civil service written exam to become a Honolulu Police Department officer.

Representatives from Honolulu police also will be at the "Job Quest 2003" at the Neal Blaisdell Center today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applications for metropolitan police recruit and police radio dispatcher will be available.

Applications can be picked up at the HPD Career Center at 715 S. King St., at police stations on O'ahu, satellite city halls and the city Department of Human Resources.

HPD lost 183 officers in 2002, 84 of them to retirement.

Applicants for officer recruits must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and 20 years of age or older. They must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a driver's license, and be legally eligible to carry firearms.

Character and background checks, psychological screening and medical and polygraph examinations will follow successful passage of the written exam.

As of July 1, recruits' salary started at $2,784 per month, plus benefits. After 18 months of satisfactory service as a metropolitan police recruit, they are eligible for promotion to metropolitan police officer I, at a salary of $3,006 per month.

For more information on job qualifications and benefits, contact the HPD Career Center at 547-7041 or the department's Web site at www.honolulupd.org.
