Women's club elects leaders

The Chinese Women's Club of Honolulu has elected officers and directors for 2003. Officers are: Irene C. Johnson, president; Sandra Hee Hagen, first vice president; Alda Mae Takabayashi, second vice president; Susan L. Boyter, recording secretary; Rena Young Ochse, corresponding secretary; Elizabeth Chiang, treasurer; Vivian H. Young, assistant treasurer; Juanita Hu Takara, auditor; Sandra T. Goya, sergeant at arms.

Directors are: Blossom Y. Tyau, nominating chairwoman; Rosie K. Chang, Helen L. Char, Daisy Y.M. Ching, Elsie L. Won, Pauline Tseu Young, ex-officio.


Executive joins Goodwill board

Walt Thorndike, president of Thorndike & Associates, has been elected to the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of Hawaii.

He is past president of the Rotary Club of Waikiki and past commodore of the Hawaii Yacht Club. He will serve on Goodwill's community relations/fund-raising and human services/human resources committees.


Mental health director named

Paula Heim has been named executive director of the Mental Health Association in Hawaii. She joined the association as public education director in 1998 and was promoted to program director in 1999.

She has been instrumental in strengthening the association's presence in the community and at the Legislature, working to empower people who have mental illnesses through projects such as the Leadership Academy and Advance Directives for Psychiatric Treatment. In 2000, Heim was the recipient of the Senator Daniel K. Inouye Award from the Hawaii Psychological Association for her work in mental health.


Micronesia justice named

Hawai'i native Dennis K. Yamase has been sworn in as an associate justice in the Federated States of Micronesia's Supreme Court.

Yamase, a graduate of the University of Hawai'i's William S. Richardson School of Law, has worked as an attorney in the Federated States of Micronesia, Northern Marianas and Palau for 20 years.

Yamase will be based in Weno, Chuuk.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu has named its officers and board of directors for 2003. Officers are: Nita Williams, HR-Pacific, chair; Neal Yokota, Stryker Weiner & Yokota, chair-elect; Jan Kuromoto, Pacific Century Trust, treasurer; Bonnie Freitas, Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii Inc., secretary; J.P. Damon, Kaimana Ventures Ltd., committee chair, resource development; Sharon Otagaki, committee chair, program services; Debra Yoshino, committee chair, public relations/recruitment; Glenn Inouye, Servco Pacific Inc., immediate past chair.
