Raiders outlast Crusaders in OT

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Playing Saint Louis School in football is a tough assignment, even for the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.

Playing the Crusaders in basketball can be just as tough, at least for the No. 1-ranked team in Hawai'i.

Defending state champion Iolani found that out last night, surviving Saint Louis, 54-47, in overtime. The victory left the Raiders, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of media and coaches, atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings with a 4-0 record. The visiting Saints, ranked No. 3, fell to 3-1.

Iolani outscored the Crusaders 9-2 in overtime, but barely escaped an intense regulation after Saint Louis missed a partially blocked layup as time expired. The Saints had overcome a 38-31 deficit entering the fourth period and took a 45-43 lead on Desmond Hanohano's layup with three minutes remaining.

Bobby Nash tied it at 45-all on a putback with 2:45 left, and neither team scored again until overtime.

Ryan Hirata's 15-foot jumper put Iolani up 47-45 and Derrick Low's layup and free throw made it 50-45 with 2:16 remaining, but Wilson Afoa immediately answered with a putback. Low, who finished with a game-high 19 points, and Zach Tollefson finally sealed it with layups in the final 30 seconds.

"We've built a rivalry with Saint Louis over the years, because they're always bigger and stronger and we're usually more fast and quick, but with skinnier guys," said Nash, a senior. "But I think it brings out the best in us."

Nine of the Crusaders' top 10 players were members of the football team that gave No. 1-ranked De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) its toughest challenge of the season last fall. Saint Louis went on to win the state championship, but that meant basketball practice did not begin until Dec. 9 — three weeks after everybody else.

The rust showed in the Iolani Prep Classic a week later, but last night the Saints proved they're a legitimate threat to win the state basketball title as well.

"They're big and strong and physical, but they're also good athletes who use their strength well," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "They get in your face on defense and keep you off-balanced all the time, so you can't shoot your best. They've always given us problems, even in years when we won state championships."

Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said the Crusaders aren't satisfied with just giving Iolani tough games.

"We go in there expecting to win; we didn't feel it would have been an upset if we won," Tengan said. "I thought the key tonight was we turned the ball over too many times. It was a lack of execution, and we'll need to do a better job."
