THE LEFT LANE
'Anti-animal' media criticized in report

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The Humane Society of the United States has its hackles up over media messages it believes are anti-animal. Among them: an episode of TV's "The Parkers." In the sitcom, a daughter asks her mother how to discipline a new dog. "With a smack on the butt with a newspaper," the mother replies, telling the dog: "Run before I turn you into shoes and a purse."

Others included in the society's annual "Foe Paw" report include:

  • Esquire magazine, for an article on how to eat an entire cow.
  • Maxim magazine, for a photo caption contest involving a photograph showing a boy using a vacuum cleaner on a cat.
  • "Fear Factor," which the society deemed "a gross excuse for entertainment" that subjects human contestants to duress and, the society said, undoubtedly causes "mental and physical injury" to the rats, snakes and other animals used in stunts.

'American Idols' together again

Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson

K-I-S-S-I-N-G?

"Maybe," says a coy Justin Guarini, 24, the curly-topped runner-up on TV's "American Idol" singing competition.

But don't get any funny ideas about real-life hanky-panky between him and "Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson, 20. "We're friends," she asserts, "which is good, because we've been working together for the past year."

The budding movie stars play themselves, sort of, as college students on spring break who fall for each other in the song-filled surfside romp "From Justin to Kelly: The Rise of Two American Idols."

"Grease" on the beach, anyone?

Skirts, pants join in fashion statement

You've heard of the "skort," that skirt/shorts hybrid? Perhaps this latest look should be called the "skant."

It might seem as if people had trouble deciding what to wear. But fashionable women are teaming short skirts, dresses and chemises with skinny pants to create a new kind of layering.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have flirted with marrying their skirts and trousers. "It's a little more Cameron Diaz than 'Sugar Magnolia,' " says Cindi Leive, editor of Glamour magazine.
