ABC show survives CBS lawsuit challenge

Let the celebrity bug-eating begin.

A judge ruled Monday that ABC can broadcast its new celebrity-based reality show — even though CBS claimed it was a blatant ripoff of its "Survivor" megahit.

Manhattan Federal Court Judge Loretta Preska ruled "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here" was substantially different from "Survivor" and that ABC had not infringed on the CBS show's copyright.

Preska's decision gives ABC the go-ahead to begin airing "I'm a Celebrity" on Feb. 19. The show takes B-list stars to the Australian rain forest to engage in "Survivor"-like challenges such as eating bugs and maggots.

In her ruling, Preska said evidence showed that "I'm a Celebrity" had been created independently in 1998, before "Survivor" hit the airwaves.

Selleck stars as 'Monte Walsh'

SELLECK
Who can't identify with Monte Walsh? He's battling a new age of corporate bigness, of effete Easterners who see only dollar signs.

In short, it's tough to be a cowboy in the late 1800s.

Tom Selleck stars in the title role of "Monte Walsh," a big, lusty yarn about the Old West giving in to modern ways, premiering on TNT today at 6 and 8:30 p.m.

RIVERS
Barry Rivers, coordinator of the Maui Film Festival, is at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah — and he's percolating with the aloha spirit. KavaJava, the official coffee of the Maui Film Festival, is being served free at Sundance, along with CoCoMacNut Biscotti, today through Jan. 25 at Cafe Terigo on Main Street in Park City. The Hawai'i contingent is also adding a bit of hula today to mark the launching of the film festival.
