Warriors unveil banner, then lose

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team unveiled a banner commemorating its 2002 national championship tonight, then unraveled against Shanghai Oriental in the final match of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Shanghai easily won, 30-27, 30-19, 30-27.

Shanghai, which did not lose a game in three matches, claimed the Outrigger title. Shanghai's average winning margin was 6.3 points per game.

But UH's setback which does not count in its overall record did not diminish the festivities of the banner ceremony.

The ceremony was staged just before the introduction of the starting lineups. With smoke billowing from the rafters, the banner was unfurled, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd of 6,679. Several UH players embraced.

Shanghai outside hitter Shen Qiong was named the tournament's most outstanding player. Delano Thomas and Costas Theocharidis were the only Warriors named to the all-tournament team.
