FAITH BRIEFS
Scholarship offered at HPU

Hawai'i Pacific University has established a scholarship for incoming freshmen and transfer students active in their religious communities.

The Dr. and Mrs. Frank E. Butterworth Scholarship, a 100 percent tuition-only scholarship that can be renewed, will be awarded to four new students each year.

Butterworth, a longtime HPU trustee, retired in 1973 as superintendent for the United Methodist Churches in Hawai'i.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a member of an organized religion or faith in Hawai'i or other Pacific islands, involved in a religious community and nominated by the leadership. Seniors in high school must have a grade point average of at least 3.5; transfer students must have a college GPA of 3.0 or higher.

All religious faiths and/or denominations may nominate a student each year.

The deadline to submit a nomination for fall 2003 is Feb. 15.

Analyst/priest speaks today

Dr. Mokusen Miyuki, a Jungian analyst who is also a Buddhist priest, will give a free talk on "engaged Buddhism" today as part of the Kanmo Imamura Lecture Series.

The lecture will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.

Miyuki will speak on "Shinran Shonin's Vision of the Nembutsu," addressing the role of vision in engaged Buddhism, an individual search for meaning.

He will focus on how the Buddhist practice of nembutsu develops the ego-self axis and strengthens the ego through the assimilation of the unconscious.

Miyuki is a professor at the C.G. Jung Institute and California State University Northridge. Special guests appearing with him will be Dr. Ryo Imamura, a professor with Evergreen College who is also a Buddhist priest, and Dr. Alfred Bloom, professor emeritus, University of Hawai'i and the Institute for Buddhist Studies.
