HPD radio trouble cuts off officers

A problem with the Honolulu Police Department's digital radio system yesterday morning prevented patrol officers from communicating with dispatchers for at least five minutes. Police said it did not affect public safety.
The problem affected officers in five of O'ahu's eight police districts. Beginning about 9 a.m., officers could talk to each other but not with dispatchers, police said. Officers were asked to switch to a backup radio channel until technicians fixed the problem about 10 a.m.
The city has spent $42 million on the digital radio system, including improvements.
