Pahoa man shot during argument

A 44-year-old Big Island man was in critical condition after he was shot yesterday during an argument with another man, police said.

Calvin L. Kobayashi, of Pahoa, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and later flown to The Queen's Medical Center on O'ahu after the shooting, which occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m., police said.

Police arrested a 41-year-old man and were holding him in the police cellblock pending further investigation.

Police were told that Kobayashi was repairing a boat, and that the owner came to pick it up. The two men began to argue, and the boat owner allegedly got a handgun and began shooting at Kobayashi, hitting him once in the side.

The 41-year-old man drove off but called police about 10 minutes later to tell them where he was. He surrendered without resistance, police said.

21-year-old injured in Kaua'i collision

LAWA'I, Kaua'i — A Kalaheo man was critically injured Thursday in a two-truck collision on Kaumuali'i Highway in Lawa'i.

Police said the 21-year-old victim was turning left from Oyama Road onto Kaumuali'i Highway when his small pickup was struck broadside by a larger pickup traveling toward Lihu'e.

Police said the 21-year-old victim was transported to an O'ahu hospital for treatment. His passenger was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the other pickup was not hurt.

HFD chopper aids in battling blaze

Firefighters yesterday dealt with a small, stubborn daylong brushfire in the wilderness above Round Top Drive near Tantalus, but the blaze was not considered a threat to homes.

The fire began about 8 a.m. and was above 4500 Round Top Drive in the Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve area, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

Because the fire was hard to reach by foot, HFD's Air One helicopter was brought in to drop water on the fire, Battalion Chief Paul Gerard said. Several fire trucks were called to the scene to transport water up Round Top Drive for the helicopter since there were no hydrants on the upper portion of the road.

Police closed off the upper part of Round Top Drive to visitor traffic to acccommodate fire trucks.

Teen arrested; bomb recovered

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of trying to detonate a pipe bomb at Farrington High School.

Witnesses reported seeing the student attempt to light a fuse at 11:11 a.m. The boy was arrested as a juvenile for first-degree terroristic threatening.

Police recovered a pipe bomb and said it was powerful enough to cause death or serious injury.

Waikiki assault suspect charged

Police on Thursday charged 38-year-old William Jackson Barnes with first-degree assault and unauthorized control of a vehicle stemming from the ramming of a police car Jan. 4 in Waikiki.

Prosecutors are seeking $125,000 bail for the two felony counts and $25,000 bail for an additional charge of second-degree possession of a dangerous drug related to Barnes' arrest Wednesday in Pauoa.

On Jan. 4, a patrol officer stopped Barnes in Waikiki for driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street. As the officer approached Barnes' car, Barnes allegedly backed the vehicle at a high speed into a second police car and fled the scene.
