Castle downs Kalaheo, 48-41
By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer
KANE'OHE Castle High School boys basketball coach Rocky Fraticelli said he tries to look at the Knights' annual meeting with Kalaheo as "just another game," but his team's 48-41 home victory over the Mustangs last night was not just another win.
It was only the second time in at least 13 years that Castle had beaten Kalaheo, and the first since 2000. Emmett "Doonie" Aberilla scored 16 points, including a 3-pointer that put the Knights up 43-41 with 1:27 remaining, and Castle finished the game with a 10-0 run in the final 3:34 to improve to 5-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division.
Kalaheo, which has won 10 of the past 12 OIA championships, fell to 3-1. The Mustangs are ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide poll of coaches and media, and the Knights are No. 10.
"To us, it's a big deal because that school is right down the road from us, and we're both fighting for the East title," Aberilla said. "Our coach was pushing us and the team just believed."
Castle certainly showed persistence last night.
The Knights trailed for most of the game and four times climbed to within one point of Kalaheo in the second half, only to see the Mustangs immediately answer with a basket to widen the lead.
But after Sam Wilhoite's two free throws gave Kalaheo a 41-38 advantage with 3:34 left, the Mustangs could not score another point. Kalaheo's last field goal was Wilhoite's layup with 5:22 remaining.
"We turned the ball over twice and didn't hit our shots," Mustangs coach Pete Smith said. "They outplayed us down the stretch, and we made too many little mistakes earlier that helped them stay in the game. We had some chances to get up by 10 or 12 and didn't do it. We let them stay close."
Castle is used to close games by now. The Knights needed overtime to defeat McKinley, 38-35, and edged Kahuku, 54-53, on Tuesday.
