Red Sox, Agbayani agree to one-year deal

AGBAYANI
Hawai'i's resident major leaguer Benny Agbayani agreed to a one-year contract worth $610,000 with the Boston Red Sox yesterday.

Agbayani, 31, avoided arbitration by reaching the agreement. He spent time between Colorado and the Red Sox last season, as well as at triple-A Colorado Springs. He batted .297 in 13 games for the Red Sox after he was claimed off waivers from Colorado on Aug. 26.

In five seasons with the Mets, Colorado and the Red Sox, Agbayani is hitting .274 with 299 hits, 39 home runs and 156 RBIs.

Agbayani played for the Los Mochis Sugarcane Growers of the Mexican Pacific League during the winter and batted .322 and a .458 on-base percentage with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs in 50 games.

According to The Associated Press, Agbayani was mentioned as part of a compensation package to Japan's Nagoya Chunichi Dragons in return for outfielder Kevin Millar. The Red Sox claimed Millar off waivers from the Florida Marlins. But Millar agreed to a two-year deal worth $6.2 million with the Dragons after rejecting Boston's waiver claim, a right he has as a veteran, the AP said. That forced Boston to deal with Chunichi, which turned down the trade.
