First Hawaiian helps Arc of Hilo

The Arc of Hilo has been awarded a $10,000 grant from First Hawaiian Foundation, the charitable arm of First Hawaiian Bank. The money, to be paid over two years, will assist with its groundskeeping and landscaping vocational training program.

The Arc of Hilo is a nonprofit organization that provides vocational training and housing, Medicaid waiver and employment services for people with disabilities on the Big Island.


Arts group gets money

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has awarded $20,000 to the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education to cover general operations for fiscal 2003.

Hawai'i is one of nine state arts alliances to receive the full amount of money available.

The alliance, formed in 1980, represents 110 arts and education organizations and 350 individual artists and educators statewide. It was formed to advocate for the arts in education.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts distributed $496,416 in grants.

Other states receiving full funding were Alabama, California, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Ohio, Oregon and Vermont.

The Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education has been a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network since 1980.


Executive group names officers

The Honolulu Chapter of Executive Women International has named officers and directors for 2003:

Wo & Sons Ltd; Vice President Shera Tamanaha of HMSA; Secretary Eloise Sasaki of Verizon Hawaii; Treasurer Ka Noi Lam of Smith Barney; Shannon Castillo of Ernst & Young LLP; Janet Kosaka of Varsity Flowers & Greenhouse dba Gourmet Specialties; Karen Lynden of King Sweep LLC; Kay Sasaki of Aon Risk Services Inc. of Hawaii; Susan Uyetake of Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki; and Joanne Watase-Yang of Hawai'i Community Foundation.

Executive Women International brings together key individuals from diverse businesses to promote member firms, enhance personal and professional development and encourage community involvement.

$100,000 helps meals program

River of Life Mission has received a $100,000 grant from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to support its feeding programs.

River of Life provides about 10,000 free hot meals monthly to men, women and children at its downtown Honolulu facility and an additional 20,000 meals through its family food box program.
