Mililani's Asamura pitcher perfect

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The wind at Mililani High School softball field yesterday was blowing unusually out of the southwest, and dark afternoon clouds started to unleash cold raindrops right in pitcher Miki Asamura's face.

Kamehameha's India Soo, left, tries to control the ball as Iolani's Patricia Wong defends in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls soccer game at Iolani. Kamehameha won, 1-0.

But for Asamura, it was a perfect day.

Mililani's ace retired all 21 Wai'anae batters she faced to record her second perfect game in as many years and give the Trojans (7-0) sole possession of first place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division with a 3-0 victory. Wai'anae dropped to 7-1.

Asamura, a senior right-hander, struck out eight.

"I love my defense so much — I give them all the credit," Asamura said. "They made a lot of good plays."

Mililani also gave Asamura a 2-0 lead in the first inning after two hits and two wild pitches, plus an error. The Trojans added a run in the fifth after Tiffany Anguay-Kalau doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball.

But Asamura was in control throughout, making insurance runs unnecessary.

Asamura pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks against Campbell last week, and has yet to give up a run in four appearances this season. She has allowed only one walk and has hit only one batter.

Asamura threw a perfect game against Waipahu last season en route to earning first-team Advertiser All-State honors.

"She looks a little quicker than last year, and her riser was really tough today," Wai'anae coach Lance Watanabe said. "We told our girls to lay off it, but no matter what we said, they couldn't. She was really effective."

Among the Seariders Asamura shut down was leadoff batter Shaylla Moses, who entered the game batting .609 (14-for-23) with two home runs, two triples and two doubles. Moses went 0-for-3.

"Miki threw the 'up' ball well; she would spot the 'low' and get ahead early, then push the issue with her up," Mililani coach Mike Okimoto said. "Her velocity is better this year, and I think she felt confident."

Okimoto credits an in-season weight training program with helping Asamura and the rest of the Trojans.

"Before, we would lift only in the preseason and then stop, but now we go twice a week as long as our schedule doesn't change because of rain," Okimoto said. "We gotta lift because we have small girls. A lot of other teams are physically stronger than us."

Yesterday's victory was the Trojans' 58th straight in OIA regular season and playoff action, dating to 1998. Mililani has won the past four OIA championships.
