Saint Louis tops Kamehameha

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

A player like Saint Louis' Jason Rivers can only be held down for so long before he gets into the flow.

Last night against Kamehameha, it took the 6-foot-2 senior a full half before his offense came around.

Rivers, who earlier in the day accepted a scholarship from the University of Hawai'i football team, scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half and Timo Paepule scored nine of his 15 points in the first half to lead Saint Louis over Kamehameha, 53-45, last night at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.

"We just tried to isolate (Rivers) a few times and get him some easy buckets going to the basket," Crusaders coach Delbert Tengan said. "Once he got in the rhythm he was a lot more effective."

Saint Louis moved into second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with a 5-1 record. Kamehameha fell to 4-2. Both teams trail 6-0 Iolani.

"It was a big win coming off the loss to Iolani," Rivers said. "It's important to finish the first round in second place."

ILH teams play two rounds with seven games in each.

Saint Louis led by as many as nine points in the first half, and took a 23-20 lead into halftime.

Kamehameha took a brief 32-31 lead on a 17-foot jumper by Waika Spencer with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter.

But B.J. Batts gave the Crusaders the lead for good with a 3-pointer 30 seconds later.

The shot ignited a 17-6 run that gave Saint Louis its largest lead at 48-38 with 2:30 remaining. Rivers had 10 points during the spurt and an assist that led to a layup by Paepule.

"Saint Louis hit big shots when they needed baskets," Kamehameha coach Darryl Gabriel said.

Kamehameha forced 15 turnovers, including nine in the third quarter, but Gabriel wasn't pleased with his team's defensive effort.

"Anytime we give up over 40 points we've not played good defense," Gabriel said. "I think we're the best defensive team in the state. Saint Louis can score, but I don't think we did a good job."
