Arizona State routs UH-Hilo

Ryan Bosch hit a grand slam and Arizona State pounded 19 hits to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo 18-3 in a college baseball game at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona, yesterday.

Arizona State is 4-0, Hawai'i-Hilo 0-4.

Bosch hit his grand slam in an eight-run eighth inning that gave the Sun Devils an 18-0 lead.

Erik Averill pitched 7¡ innings, allowing two runs, one hit, striking out seven and walking one.

Tom Henderson hit a two-run single in Hilo's three-run eighth.


FOOTBALL

• New Waialua coach: Lincoln Barit has been named head football coach at Waialua High School.

Barit, 41, was the Bulldogs' JV coach the past three seasons and has coached in the Waialua program for a total of 14 years since 1981.

Barit graduated from Waialua in 1979 and his son Justin was a junior linebacker for the Bulldogs this past season. Barit was defensive coordinator for the Waialua team that won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Blue Conference in 1992.

He replaces Don "Chico" Capello, who resigned last month after four seasons.


SAILING

• UH Red leads: The University of Hawai'i Red co-ed sailing team was first with a meet-low 40 points after the first day of the Rainbow Invite at the HCC Marine Education and Training Center.

UH Red consists of Bryan Lake, Jennifer Warnock, Joey Pasquali and Katie Jackson.

Stanford is second with 46 points.
