Chilly weather expected tonight

By Mike Gordon
Advertiser Staff Writer

So what if it won't be cold enough tonight to set a record low in Honolulu. You'll be shivering too much to notice.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures from 55 degrees to 60 degrees throughout the state. The record low in Honolulu for Jan. 22, which was set in 1978 and tied in 1996, is 54 degrees.

"It's all relative, though," said weather service forecaster Tim Craig. "If you were in Alaska, this would be a heat wave."

A high pressure system that followed a cold front yesterday will settle over the islands this afternoon and tonight, Craig said. Winds will be light, the air dry and the sky clear all the right ingredients for a chilly night, he said.

Temperatures early this morning dipped into the 50s, but no records were set, Craig said. It was 59 degrees in Honolulu, 55 degrees in Lihu'e, 56 degrees in Kahului and 60 degrees in Hilo.

Craig likes it just fine.

"It's nice and pleasantly cool," he said. "I've worked in Alaska. Take my word for it, this is downright hot."
