Highway utility pole will be replaced

A leaning utility pole which yesterday caused a section of Kamehameha Highway between Sunset Beach and Velzeyland to be closed to traffic has been braced but will need to be replaced at a later date, according to Fred Kobashikawa of Hawaiian Electric Co.

Kobashikawa said the replacement work will be done at a time when traffic will be least impacted. The date, however, has not yet been determined. Once the new pole is up, work needs to be done to connect electrical, telephone and cable TV wires, which needs to be done by the individual companies, said Kobashikawa.

Bicyclist remains in critical condition

A 17-year-old boy injured Sunday morning on Fort Weaver Road in 'Ewa when a pickup truck collided with the bicycle he was riding remains in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center. Also listed as critical is a 21-year-old man who crashed his car Saturday night on the Maunaloa Highway in west Moloka'i.

Velzeyland human remains examined

Burial sites specialists from the Department of Land & Natural Resources today were checking on human remains recovered on the shoreline at Velzeyland.

"It's not uncommon when there's high surf for burial sites to erode out," said Kai Markell of DLNR's burial sites program. He noted there are many ancient Hawaiian burial sites along shorelines on the North Shore.
