Maui developers denied right to build at Palauea
Associated Press
Maui County's new planning director has pulled shoreline exemptions that would have allowed two property owners at Palauea Bay to build without public review.
Stop-work orders were issued because the residential projects conflicted with the Kihei-Makena Community Plan, said Planning Director Mike Foley.
The special management area exemptions were approved Dec. 30-31 by the former planning director in the final days of former Mayor James Apana's administration.
Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa was sworn in Jan. 2.
Attorneys for the owners have said they might appeal.
