Lingle to testify in Congress

Gov. Linda Lingle will go to Washington, D.C., next month to testify in Congress and meet with the Bush administration on the issue of federal recognition for Native Hawaiians.

Lingle had promised during the campaign to lobby Congress and the Republican administration to grant Hawaiians federal recognition in order to ensure that entitlements and ceded lands can still be made available to Hawai'i's indigenous people in the same manner as American Indians and Native Alaskans. It would also create a process for Native Hawaiians to choose their own government.

Members of Hawai'i's congressional delegation are expected to reintroduce the Akaka Bill, named after U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, this year. It failed to gain passage last year.
