Four earn berths in Waikoloa tennis

Four players yesterday played their way in to the main draw of a USTA Challenger at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and Hawai'i Preparatory Academy tennis courts on the Big Island.
Brazil's Ricardo Mello defeated countryman Julio Silva, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and Doug Bohaboy of the United States ousted Martin Garcia of Argentina, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5, at Waikoloa. Rain forced two matches to Hawai'i Prep's covered courts in Kamuela. Yuri Schukin of Russia defeated Hermes Gamonal of Chile, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Kean Feeder of the United States outlasted countryman Ryler De Heart, 7-5, 6-7, 16-14 (3).
The 32-player main draw begins at 10 a.m. today at the Hilton Waikoloa Village's Kohala Tennis Garden. Sixteen teams are in the doubles competition. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.

Intermediate champs: Iolani defeated Punahou, 3-2, to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu intermediate girls tennis championship on Jan. 16 at the Punahou Courts. Iolani finished 8-0.
KARATE
Au wins golds: Hawai'i's Elisa Au won the 132-pound and open finals in kumite (sparring) at the USA Open Karate Championships at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Au defeated Nadia Meknouzi of Morocco in the 132-pound division and All-Japan champion Maki Ogasawara in the open final.
Au won $5,000 in prize money.
MULTISPORT
Xterra on TV: The Nissan Xterra World Championships, held last October, will be featured in a one-hour program on KGMB-TV (Channel 9, Oceanic Cable 7) at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Conrad Stoltz of South Africa and Candy Angle of Massachusetts won the professional divisions of the grueling off-road event 1.5-kilometer swim off Wailea Beach, 30-kilometer mountain bike ride up the slopes of Haleakala and 11-kilometer trail run from Makena to Wailea.
The program also features Candes Gentry, Miss Hawai'i 1999, who was one of the 444 athletes in the race.
TRACK AND FIELD
Community Sunset Series slated at UH: The University of Hawai'i track and field program will host a series of 11 community track meets at the newly renovated Cooke Field on the Manoa campus, beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and continuing through June.
All ages are welcome, and races will be grouped by ability-level rather than age group or gender. Registration is $2 for each event or $5 for three events.

SAILING
UH Red wins: The University of Hawai'i Red won the 12-team Rainbow Invite sailing meet at Ke'ehi Lagoon on Sunday.
The Red team, Bryan Lake, Jennifer Warnock, Joey Pasquali and Katie Jackson, scored a meet-low 53 points. Stanford Team 1 was second with 78 and UC Santa Barbara was third with 94.
