Blast damages metal machine

An explosion yesterday at Hawaii Metal Recycling Co. on Hanua Street caused $500,000 damage to a machine used to separate metal from other materials after a vehicle is crushed, police said.

The cause of the 9:45 p.m. explosion is under investigation. No one was injured.


Armed man robs Waikiki store

A man armed with a knife robbed Local Motion's Waikiki store at 1958 Kalakaua Ave. last night.

Employees confronted a suspect outside the store at 9:45 p.m. after being alerted by an alarm. The employees retreated when the man pulled out a hunting knife.

The suspect is still at large.


Man charged in car-burning try

Police yesterday charged a 24-year-old man, who has been cited 51 times for violating temporary restraining orders, with trying to burn a relative's car.

Keola Yahiku is charged with felony second-degree criminal property damage and three misdemeanor counts of second-degree terroristic threatening. Yahiku is being held in lieu of $40,000 bail.

He is accused of throwing a burning object into a cousin's car Sunday morning in Nanakuli. A witness put out the fire.


Charges filed in assault of man

A 43-year-old Kalihi Valley man was charged yesterday with misdemeanor abuse of a household member after his 80-year-old father was assaulted with a bamboo kendo sword during an argument Monday morning at their Noe Street residence.

Bail for Kevin Furutani was set at $2,000.


Police capture convicted burglar

Jack Viela, a convicted burglar who was wanted for violating his parole, was captured by police Specialized Services Division officers without incident Friday in Kaimuki.
