Kapi'olani Community College is reopening its Ka 'Ikena dining room for spring session next week. Lunch and dinner will be served Tuesdays through Fridays from Jan. 28 to March 4. Seatings are at 11 and 11:30 a.m. and noon for lunch, and at 5:15 and 4:45 p.m. for dinner. Reservations: 734-9499 or dining@hawaii.edu. A special curry lunch buffet is set for Feb. 13 and 14; and a dinner buffet will be offered the same days (but Feb. 14 is sold out).

The restaurant is in the 'Ohelo building on the Diamond Head campus, mauka side.

Contests won and to be won

April Tolman of Honolulu was one of 20 grand-prize winners in Mission Foods' What's In Your Tortilla recipe contest, competing against nearly 4,000 other entrants. Her recipe for Mediterranean Soft Tacos is a Middle Eastern take on the craze for wraps, made with marinated and grilled lamb and a Greek-style fresh tomato/onion/cucumber salsa flavored with lemon and herbs, and combined with hummous, feta cheese and fresh vegetables on a tortilla.

Tolman receives a trip to Disney's California Adventure theme park and her recipe will be including in Mission's next cookbook.

The recipe will be posted at www.missionfoods.com soon.

The biennial National Beef Cook-Off is accepting entries now through March 31 with more than $100,000 in cash prizes.

Check www.beefcookoff.org for rules and entry information. The cookoff is set for Sept. 26-27 in Fort Worth, Texas, where 20 finalists will compete.

Speaking of contests, Kellog's is running a Design Your Own Pop-Tart contest for children with three $10,000 prizes — a hefty advance on a college education or some other dream for the winners. Check www.poptartsmachine.com or specially marked Pop-Tart packages.

Stalking that tall corn in 'Ewa

Aloun Farms out on the 'Ewa Plain is gearing up for its annual corn maze celebration March 31-April 20: That's the time of year when the farm cuts an interesting maze-shaped swath into its corn field and offer sales of fresh-harvested produce. This year, they'll offer corn, sweet onions and a variety of melons for sale.

School groups and tours will be accommodated weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and the public can visit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; maze entrance for the public is $8 per person. The organizers are still mulling over the shape the maze will take this year.
