Kalihi man charged in assault of trio

Police yesterday charged a 26-year-old Kalihi man with first-degree assault for allegedly driving a car at three men during an argument early Sunday morning at Ke'ehi Boat Harbor.

Charles Tambua is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Tambua allegedly drove a car at three men, knocking two of them down and injuring another. The injured man, 25, was in guarded condition last night at The Queen's Medical Center.


Hospital escapee gives up to police

A 43-year-old state hospital escapee turned himself in to police Monday in downtown Honolulu.

John Wedeking walked up to a patrol officer at the intersection of Kapi'olani Boulevard and Ward Avenue at 2:50 a.m. and told the officer he had run away from Hawai'i State Hospital in Kane'ohe.

Wedeking had escaped from the hospital at 45-710 Kea'ahala Road at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.


Velzeyland human remains examined

Burial sites specialists from the Department of Land and Natural Resources yesterday were checking on human remains recovered on the shoreline at Velzeyland.

"It's not uncommon when there's high surf for burial sites to erode out," said Kai Markell of DLNR's burial sites program. He noted there are many ancient Hawaiian burial sites along shorelines on the North Shore.
