Perry & Price still No. 1 despite ratings shake-up

 •  Chart: Radio's Top 10

Some ratings never change. Michael W. Perry and Larry Price hold on to their perennial No. 1 ranking in the quarterly Arbitron radio ratings, just released.

In the second- through fifth-place rankings, however, changes abound, with more ups and downs than an elevator. Lower-rated stations in the past have moved up, toppling the previously ranked No. 2 station and pulling it down a few notches.

The reason? Some observers believe that this time around, Arbitron diaries — the logs in which listeners post their tune-in habits — may have gone to adults with a wider range of tastes, giving adult contemporary music stations a vote of confidence.

That triggered a decline in the ratings for stations programming local music.

This means KSSK-FM still rules and its one-two morning punch —Perry & Price — still delivers.

In second place, though quite a distance behind, a new No. 2 has emerged in KRTR-FM, which rose from No. 7.

In the morning ratings, KRTR-FM's wake-up duo of Chris Reiser and Chris Hart moved up from No. 5 to No. 2.

KINE-FM and KCCN-FM, two stations with playlists of local music, previously had a 26 share; now the stations' share has fallen down to around 20, said Mike Kelly, general manager of the two stations.

But Kelly said the slippage is no cause for alarm within his company, since KINE, KCCN and KRTR are all part of the Cox Radio family. Cox now maintains the No. 2, 3 and 4 stations in the overall Top 10.

"It's simply a good adult contemporary book," Kelly said.

KCCN-FM, which was No. 2 in the summer, dropped to No. 3. In the morning ratings, Billy Van Osdol and Charly Espina (Espina has since vacated her post, succeeded by Lina Girl), sank to No. 4. Billy V and Charley also suffered the biggest loss of measured audience share, losing 2.9 shares.

KHUI-FM, the station playing classic Hawaiian music that made it to No. 7 in the overall survey and No. 10 in the morning last summer, failed to score this time.

Biggest gains in morning drive were logged by Rory Wild and Greg Hammer at KIKI-FM, who were up 2.4 points, followed by Reiser and Heart at KRTR, whose gains totaled 2.1 points.

Correction: Charly Espina recently left radio station KCCN. Her name was misspelled in a previous version of this story.
