Top two seeds lose at USTA's Waikoloa Challenger

Robert Kendrick ousted top-seeded Taylor Dent in the first round of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday, heading the list of three upsets of seeded players.

Kendrick, ranked 170th by the Association of Tennis Professionals, beat 57th-ranked Dent, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Louis Vosloo defeated No. 2 Brian Vahaly, 6-3, 7-6 (4), and Sebastian De Chaunac defeated No. 7 Ivan Miranda, 6-4, 7-6 (6).

The first round continues today, with singles and double matches beginning at 10 a.m. at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and Hawai'i Prep Rutgers Tennis Complex in Kamuela.

Past singles winners of the Waikoloa tournament include James Blake (2002) and Andy Roddick (2001).


BASKETBALL

• BYUH's Foyle honored: Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's basketball player Alexus Foyle was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his performance in three road games in which he averaged 30.6 points per game.

Foyle, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from Canouan, St. Vincent, scored 35 in a 103-62 victory against Western New Mexico on Jan. 14. Two days later, he scored 34 in a rematch with the Mustangs in a 83-63 win. He scored 23 in a 86-76 loss to Montana State Billings Saturday.

For the week, Foyle made 40 of 64 field-goal attempts and shot 63 percent. He was 10 for 14 from the free-throw line and 2 for 4 from 3-point range.

Foyle, the reigning conference player of the year, leads the PacWest in scoring at 26 points per game.

BYUH is 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
