Foodbank drive opens tomorrow

The Hawai'i Foodbank will kick off its statewide drive with a rally and breakfast at 7:15 a.m. tomorrow in the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom.

More than 300 people are expected to attend, including representatives from businesses, charitable and volunteer groups, and state agencies.

The drive, now in its 14th year, has set a goal of collecting 525,000 pounds of food and $400,000 in contributions to fight hunger.

The drive will culminate April 19, when drop-off sites will have been established across the island to collect the food and donations.

The most needed items include canned tuna, spaghetti, chili and corned beef, soups, vegetables and fruits, and beans.

Sites include Restaurant Row, Koko Marina Center, Town Center of Mililani, McCully Shopping Center, Pearl City Shopping Center, Wai'anae Mall, Windward City Shopping Center, Waiokeola Congressional Church in Kahala and several military bases.

Companies or organizations that would like to send representatives to the breakfast can call 836-3600, ext. 240. To volunteer at a drop-off site, connect to ext. 239.

EAST HONOLULU

Police station is foremost goal

The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board wants to make construction of the proposed East Honolulu police station the community's priority and will take up the topic at next week's meeting.

The project was placed on hold recently because of a city budget crunch and because bids came in too high.

The board hopes to send a letter to Mayor Jeremy Harris and the City Council stating that the police station is a priority for the community and that no other projects should be financed ahead of it.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Haha'ione Elementary School cafeteria. For more information call 527-5578.
