HPU names poetry winner

Dawn Fraser Kawahara received the James Vaughan Award for Poetry at Hawai'i Pacific University for her poem "Approaching Nounou Mountain."

Kawahara, of Kaua'i, will receive $500, and her work will be published in Volume 17 of HPU's literary magazine, "Hawai'i Pacific Review."

Maui resident Erin Starr earned honorable mention for her poem "Storm in Makawao."

The Vaughan award was established to enhance literature and poetry programs at HPU. Each year, the school recognizes a Hawai'i writer for an outstanding poem or group of poems.


Lanakila gets $75,000 gift

Lanakila has received a $75,000 grant from the McInerny Foundation to renovate its Bachelot Street site.

The site, opened in 1968, offers programs to support adults with disabilities, including its Adult Day

Services, Workforce Development Program and Lanakila Meals on Wheels.


YMCA receives federal grant

The YMCA of Honolulu has received a $170,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Project Safe Neighborhoods to help reduce gun violence.

YMCA will work with other nonprofit agencies, community groups, law enforcement and news media to achieve the goal of reducing gun-related crime.


IHS gets aid for homeless

The Institute for Human Services has received several grants to help its programs assisting homeless people in 2003.

The Weinberg Foundation gave $100,000, and the Mililani High School Key Club gave a $5,000 "Educating the Heart" gift.

The Koenig Foundation donated $65,000 for the Homeless Family Support Program and general operating expenses, and the McInerny Foundation gave $50,000. A $25,000 gift came from the Cades Foundation to help with shelter operations, and the Hawai'i Hotel Association gave $10,000 for the Homeless Families Support Program, IHS Meal Program and to help pay for a triage counselor.


Arts alliance given $20,000

The Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education has received $20,000 from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for general operational support.

The alliance advocates recognition of the value of arts in education. It represents 110 arts and education organizations and 350 individual artists and educators statewide.
