Youthful Castle topples Kalaheo in girls soccer

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

It's taken nearly the entire O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division girls' soccer season, but Castle coach Mark Kane thinks his young team is finally coming of age.

Castle (6-0-3), a team with only two seniors, used a freakish goal in the 77th minute by freshman Lindsey Watanabe to beat visiting Kalaheo, 1-0, last night.

"They're getting ready and coming along at the right time," said Kane, whose team also has four freshmen, six sophomores and four juniors. "They're finally stepping up, we always knew they had the potential."

The Knights are atop the East with 21 points, but five other teams, including Kalaheo (6-1-2), are within three points. Four of the six teams will go head-to-head Saturday — the final week of the regular season.

Kalaheo dominated play yesterday, but was victimized by a bit of bad luck.

Watanabe controlled the ball about 20 yards from the goal, dribbled a few times and blasted a 15-yard shot that deflected off the head of a Kalaheo defender and into the left bottom corner of the goal just beside Mustangs goalie Amy Lusk.

"Coach just told me to dribble and take them on and challenge the other team," Watanabe said.

Up to that point, Castle didn't have any solid scoring opportunities, but used a bend-but-don't-break defense.

"We lucked out and played pretty decent defense," Kane said.

In the first half, Kalaheo had two scoring opportunities off flip throw-ins by Brandi Benson, but couldn't put close-range shots in the goal.

In a span of four minutes midway through the second half, Kalaheo's Tina Garcia sent a 15-yard shot just left of the goal, Castle's Lovey Walker headed a shot away while standing just in front of the goal line and Castle's Aubrey Nakagawa kicked a shot away just in front of the goal line.

"That's the way the ball bounces; that's the way the game is played," Kalaheo coach Alan Heu said. "Anything happens in this game, you can dominate for 79 minutes and on the 80th minute a bad bounce or whatever and the ball's in the net, the game is over."

Heu wasn't overly concerned with the loss.

"They're a good team and I'm not going to take it away from them because they did win tonight, but the way we play the game and stuff I still think we're the team to beat," Heu said. "Our record doesn't show it and they beat us tonight, but that's tonight. If we meet them in the playoffs it might be a different story."

Castle will play Kahuku (6-2-1) and Kalaheo will meet Moanalua (5-1-3) Saturday.

"Kahuku is a big, physical, fast team and we seem to have problems (with that) because we're tiny," Kane said.
