Radford slips past Mililani in boys basketball, 44-40

By Wes Nakama

MILILANI — Trying to bring silence to one of the loudest gyms in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, Radford's Tauran Moore swished two free throws with five seconds remaining last night to preserve the Rams' intense 44-40 road victory over previously unbeaten Mililani.

Radford improved to 5-0 in the OIA's Western Division, a half-game behind Leilehua (6-0). Mililani, despite the volume raised by its notorious yellow-clad cheering section, fell to 4-1.

The Rams led since early in the second period, but the Trojans closed to 42-40 with 10 seconds left on Puna Newman's jumper from just inside the 3-point line. Moore was fouled in the backcourt five seconds later, then coolly sank both shots.

Radford had missed five free throws earlier in the quarter.

"I just thought about making them; I tried to block out the crowd," Moore said. "I kept my composure and tried to stay calm, because the team needed me."

The Rams certainly needed someone to sink some free throws in the final 1:12, when Mililani mounted a furious comeback. Mike Davis made two free throws with 72 seconds remaining to put Radford up 41-34, but Brandyn Fidel answered with a free throw at 1:08 left to make it 41-35.

After two missed free throws by the Rams, Newman drained a 3-pointer from the right corner to close it to 41-38 with 33 seconds remaining. Davis made only one of two free throws seven seconds later, and Radford missed two more free throws with 18 seconds left.

Newman then fired his jumper from 19 feet out on the left wing.

"Puna did a great job for us down the stretch, but it didn't have to get to that point," Trojans coach Mike Coito said. "We were really inconsistent tonight in the execution of our halfcourt offense, and Radford did a good job of keeping us out of it. We were rushing things."

Only five players scored for Mililani, led by Fidel's 15 points. Moore scored 12 points and Joshua Auelua 10 for Radford. All of Auelua's points came in the first half, including seven in the first period when Radford overcame an 8-2 deficit to end up leading 9-8. Auelua later nailed a 3-pointer to help the Rams take a 24-16 lead into halftime.

"Joshua is usually not looking to score," Radford coach Kai Enos said. "He's unselfish, but he can be tough to defend."

Both teams still have another date with an unbeaten opponent this week. Radford plays at Leilehua and Mililani plays at Pearl City (5-0), with both games set for about 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
