QBs Leftwich, Dorsey pull out of Hula Bowl

Advertiser Staff

Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich and Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey will miss the Feb. 1 Hula Bowl on Maui because of injuries and illness, a Hula Bowl official said yesterday.

Leftwich's agent said the quarterback is still being bothered by a shin problem that was surgically repaired last spring, according to Brad Cress, the director of sponsorship and operations of the Hula Bowl. Leftwich aggravated shin injury this fall, the agent said.

Dorsey told Hula Bowl officials he has mononucleosis, Cress said.

Also, Hawai'i All-America offensive guard Vince Manuwai and linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will not play in the all-star game, Cress said.

"Their agents called and said they were choosing not to participate," Cress said.

Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti dropped out and will be replaced by R.C. Slocum, a former Texas A&M head coach who is now an announcer.

Iowa quarterback Brad Banks and Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury are still scheduled to play, along with Harvard quarterback Neil Rose (University High), California running back Joe Igber (Iolani), and five Hawai'i players, including linebacker Chris Brown, defensive back Sean Butts, defensive lineman La'anui Correa, punter Mat McBriar and wide receiver Justin Colbert. Hawai'i offensive lineman Lui Fuata will attend, but won't play because of an injury.
