Fifth-seeded Kim advances in Waikoloa Village tennis

American Alex Kim defeated Michael Kohlman of Germany, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the second round of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday.

Kim, the No. 5 seed, is a former NCAA singles and doubles tennis champion and reached the third round of the Australian Open last year.

Matches continue today at 10 a.m. at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Tennis Garden. Tickets are $5 today and increase to $10 tomorrow through Sunday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

• UHH third in West region: Hawai'i-Hilo leads three Division II Hawai'i men's basketball teams in the NCAA II West Region Rankings released yesterday.

The Vulcans (12-5) are ranked third behind Humboldt State (13-1) and Cal State-San Bernardino (9-4). Brigham Young-Hawai'i (9-2) is ranked fifth and Hawai'i Pacific (12-4) is ranked ninth.

UH-Hilo, BYUH and HPU are the only teams ranked in the top 10 in the Pacific West Conference.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

• Sonoma State won't play UHH: Sonoma State has canceled its four-game baseball series with Hawai'i-Hilo, the Vulcans announced yesterday.

The Vulcans were scheduled to play Sonoma State in doubleheaders on Feb. 6 and 7 at Wong Stadium. UHH cited conference scheduling conflicts and missed school time for Sonoma State's reasons for canceling. However, the Cossacks will use those two dates and Feb. 8 to play a six-game series at Hans L'Orange Park against Hawai'i Pacific.

The Vulcans open a six-game series against Kansas starting tomorrow with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Wong Stadium. Saturday's and Sunday's doubleheaders start at 11 a.m. at Simmons Field in Kona.

ULTRA RUNNING

• Sweeney wins 100-miler: California's Michael Sweeney won the third annual Hawaiian Ultra Running Team (HURT) Trail 100-mile Endurance Run last weekend at the Hawai'i Nature Center in Makiki.

Sweeney, 48, completed the course in 26 hours and 40 minutes. Alex Swenson of Illinois finished second (29:02) followed by Washington's Jamie Gifford (29:13). Canada's Monica Scholz (30:53), fourth overall, was the first woman finisher.

Colorado's Peter Bakwin won the 100-kilometer race (62 miles) in 13:35.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

• UH will play Alumnae: The University of Hawai'i softball team will make its season debut in the annual Alumnae game 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Admission is free.

An autograph session starts at 4. Batting practice follows at 4:30.
