Honolulu police have launched an all-out effort to find the three men and a teenager who kidnapped a 22-year-old University of Hawai'i student at gunpoint as she was walking in the Ala Moana area Jan. 9.

The woman was forced into the car, ordered to withdraw cash from automatic teller machines and later raped by two of the males, police said.

Detective Letha DeCaires of Honolulu police's CrimeStoppers program said cases in which a victim is robbed and sexually assaulted are extremely rare. "In the last 10 years I can only remember maybe three cases in which there was a robbery and sex assault simultaneously," DeCaires said.

Police have been asking the public's help on information leading to the arrest of four.

"We're hoping someone in the community can provide information, particularly the whereabouts of the vehicle used," DeCaires said. "Right now, we have a lot of plain-clothes officers questioning people and reviewing condominium surveillance tapes in these areas."

The victim was walking on Kaheka Street near Kanunu Street around 8 p.m. when a gunman named Jack forced her into a four-door, maroon compact car occupied by three other males, police said.

She was taken to a First Hawaiian Bank ATM on Liliha Street, ordered to withdraw cash, then taken to the Bank of Hawai'i ATM at Nu'uanu Shopping Plaza, police said. The four then took her to Nu'uanu Pali Drive where two of them raped her. She was dropped off opposite 4151 Nu'uanu Drive where she was helped by a passer-by.

"Something like this is not common here," said Capt. Alan Arita of HPD's Criminal Investigation Division. "We don't think the sex assault was something planned, but maybe these guys felt they could get away with it, so it escalated from a robbery into something else."

Arita said police are working on several leads that emerged since a Tuesday CrimeStoppers bulletin on the case.

DeCaires said the victim, although traumatized from the incident, was able to provide detailed information on the suspects.

"She has been very cooperative and has provided some good information to work off of," DeCaires said.

The case has garnered some publicity in Japan because the victim is a Japanese national. Kyodo News Agency asked police about the case and ran a story on the incident.

Hiroko Taniguchi, media liaison at the Hawai'i office of the Japan Consulate General, said a couple of Japanese media have inquired about the case, but was unsure how the story was being played in Japan.

The gunman — Jack — who approached her is in his mid-20s, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 6, of stocky build and with a mustache. He wore a beanie cap and carried a silver-colored semiautomatic handgun.

Another kidnapper, named Jim, is in his mid-20s, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 6 and of slim build. A third kidnapper is described as being in his mid-20s and of heavy build. The fourth is a juvenile, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 6, of slim build and with severe acne on his face.

The car used had a "Bazooka"-type muffler, including a white design decal on the car's upper front windshield.
