UHH softball picked second in PacWest

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's softball team was picked to finish second in the six-team Pacific West Conference this season, according to a preseason coaches' poll released yesterday.
Defending conference champion Western New Mexico (42-11-1 overall in 2002) was chosen as the favorite to repeat.
The Mustangs were followed by UH-Hilo (38-19), Hawai'i Pacific (21-21), Chaminade (26-23), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (10-30) and Montana State-Billings (9-17).
The 2003 softball season starts Feb. 3. The West Regional Tournament is scheduled for May 8-10.
GOLF
Benefit for Nate Jackson: A benefit golf tournament to help pay for University of Hawai'i football/baseball player Nate Jackson's medical bills will be held March 14 at the Ko'olau Golf Course. The cost is $100 per person and includes greens fees, use of a cart, entry in a grand prize raffle, a goodie bag and a banquet dinner. The format is a four-person shotgun scramble. Entry deadline is Feb. 28.

Jackson underwent successful surgery to replace a damaged heart valve Nov. 21, a condition that was caused by a bacterial infection. He is currently practicing with the UH baseball team.
