Borges lifts Roosevelt over Kaimuki, 50-48

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Bryson Borges swished a high-arching, 15-foot baseline jumper with one second remaining in overtime last night to lift the Roosevelt High School boys basketball team to a pulsating 50-48 home victory over previously unbeaten Kaimuki.

The Rough Riders (7-0) now are alone atop the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division. Kaimuki, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, falls to 5-1.

Borges' game-winning shot came after the Bulldogs' Richy Miyasaka tied the score at 48 on a free throw with 21 seconds left. Kaimuki immediately called timeout after Borges' shot, but its long inbounds pass hit a gym support beam, resulting in a turnover.

Borges, who had a 26-point night against Kailua two weeks ago, had struggled throughout the game and had just six points and one field goal through regulation.

"I was lucky to be open, and fortunately Daniel (Balbas) gave me the ball in the corner," Borges said. "The shots weren't falling all night, but I figured one of them had to drop, and luckily it was that one."

The Bulldogs' fate, however, may have been sealed much earlier when senior forward Daniel Tautofi got into foul trouble. Tautofi, a second-team Advertiser All-State selection last year who may be the OIA's best player this season, was whistled for his second foul with 4:15 remaining in the second period and Kaimuki leading 18-11.

He sat out the rest of the half, while Roosevelt rallied to tie it at 23 going into the locker rooms.

Tautofi again left the game after picking up his fourth foul with 1:58 left in the third period, and the Rough Riders took advantage by pulling ahead 33-30 entering the fourth.

"I told our guys we cannot always rely on Daniel to be our savior," Bulldogs coach Stephen Lee said. "When he gets into foul trouble, the other players gotta step up. We've gone through this many times before."

Tautofi, who finished with nine points and eight rebounds, finally fouled out on a charging call with 1:51 remaining in regulation.

Balbas scored on a layup with 1:20 left to put Roosevelt up 46-45, and James Castro's free throw with 45 seconds remaining made it 47-45. But Miyasaka sank two free throws to tie it at 47 with 25 ticks left, and Borges missed a 20-footer at the buzzer to send the game into OT.

The Rough Riders held the ball for over two minutes in overtime, as Kaimuki sat back on defense.

Anthony Holyfield's free throw with 1:21 remaining put Roosevelt up 48-47, and Miyasaka made the first of two free throws to tie it again.

Miyasaka's brother, Jimmy, scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, and Balbas, Castro and Holyfield each scored 11 points for the Rough Riders.

Roosevelt shot 33 free throws, making 20. Kaimuki was 12-of-17 from the line.

"We're short, so we try to attack the basket and draw the foul," Rough Riders coach John Chung said. "We tried to get their big guys in foul trouble, and that's what happened."
