Tokoro's 43 points sets Cal St. L.A. school mark

Sophomore point guard Monica Tokoro scored a school-record 43 points, but host Cal State Los Angeles fell to Cal State Stanislaus, 92-88, in a college basketball game last night.

Tokoro, an Iolani School graduate, was 13 of 22 from the floor, including 3 of 3 from beyond the arc, and 14 of 16 from the free-throw line. The previous record of 41 points was set by Jann Martin against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 23, 1982.

CSULA fell to 6-8 overall, 4-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stanislaus is 8-6, 5-4.

Cal State Los Angeles plays at Cal State Bakersfield tonight.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

UH-Hilo, Kansas split: University of Hawai'i-Hilo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Kansas, 8-7, yesterday in game one of a doubleheader at Simmon's Field in Kailua, Kona.

In the second game, Ryan Baty and Kyle Kilgo drove in two runs each to lead Kansas to a 9-3 victory.

UH-Hilo is 1-7, Kansas is 1-1.

In the first game, Hilo's Jay Egusa scored on Ernie Carvalho's grounder to tie the game at 7-all. Tom Henderson, who finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs, singled to right field to score Sean Tamura with the winning run.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

All-America honors: Defensive linemen Wilson Afoa of Saint Louis and Randy Faletoi of McKinley have been named to Student Sports, Inc.'s All-America football teams, released yesterday.

Afoa was one of 12 defensive linemen named to the Senior All-America team, and Faletoi was one of eight defensive linemen named to the Junior All-America team.

Student Sports is a national magazine and Web site based in Torrance, Calif.

Afoa was the Advertiser's State Defensive Player of the Year, and Faletoi also made the All-State first team.

FOOTBALL

Seminar for women on Maui: The Business and Professional Women of Maui will host a "Football for Women" seminar on Monday at Driesbach Data beginning at 6 p.m.

Former University of Hawai'i football coach Herc Vierra will lead the seminar. The seminar is open to the public, but a $5 minimum donation will be asked to benefit the Business and Professional Women of Maui's local scholarship program.

TENNIS

Americans advance at Waikoloa: The future of American tennis fared rather well Thursday at the fourth annual USTA Challenger at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island.

Robby Ginepri, Alex Bogomolov Jr., and Dmitry Tursonov, a Russian just three months shy of attaining American citizenship, all advanced with straight-set victories at the event.

Ginepri, the highest ranked player remaining in the draw and a semifinalist here last year, beat Brazilian Ricardo Mello, 6-2, 6-1; Bogomolov Jr. defeated fellow American Robert Kendrick, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4), and Tursunov ousted France's Sebastien De Chaunanc, 6-4, 6-4.

In other matches, Neville Godwin, Russia, defeated Alex Kim, United States, 6-3,6-4; Rik De Voest, Russia, beat Eric Taino, United States, 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 7-5; Yeu-Tzuoo Wang, Taipei, swept Jiri Vanek, Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-4; Bjorn Phau, Germany, defeated Robin Soderling, Sweden, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1; and Yen-Hsun Lu, Taipei, beat Louis Vosloo, Russia, 6-3, 6-3.
